Strategy for Targeting Big Pike Through the Ice

One important thing in winter pike fishing is that every angler must choose a strategy. You have to decide what you are looking for:
are you searching for where pike rest, or are you fishing where they feed?

These are two completely different approaches.

If you try to find where big pike are resting, you often look at deeper structures, drop-offs, or quiet areas where fish can stay without spending much energy.

But if your goal is to catch actively feeding fish, the situation can be very different.

Very often, even the largest pike feed surprisingly close to the shoreline in winter. Shallow areas with structure, reeds, or baitfish activity can produce the biggest fish. Many anglers are afraid to fish shallow water in winter, but big pike are comfortable there, especially when prey fish gather in these areas.

However, it always depends on the lake.

If the lake is dominated by pelagic baitfish (fish that live in open water, such as smelt or vendace), the strategy changes. In these lakes, it is often better to fish deeper water. But even then, the bait should not always be placed near the bottom.

A very effective approach is to place the bait higher in the water column. This allows the pike to see the bait from far away. A bait hanging above them can trigger a strong reaction, because predators often notice movement or silhouettes above their heads.

In other words, a big pike cruising in deep water may suddenly notice something suspended above it — an easy meal that stands out clearly against the light coming through the ice.

That contrast can make the difference between an ignored bait and a powerful strike
